Goals/Mission Statement

Newspapers In Education strives to promote literacy and responsible citizenship in children and young adults through the inclusion of newspapers with regular classroom curricula.

Instructional Objectives

Studies show that using the newspaper in the classroom on a consistent basis increases students' reading, writing, and
critical thinking skills. Students using newspapers in the classroom also tend to possess greater awareness of local,
national and global events, better background knowledge and stronger vocabularies. Newspapers In Education materials are structured carefully to align with Ohio standards.

OHIO Standards-Benchmarks

  • kidsINK pages focus on one of the Ohio state standards: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Arts, and Technology.
  • The Reading Series is a multi-chapter story with stimulating graphics. Each story is carefully considered as far as impact on students' writing and comprehension skills. The accompanying teacher guides feature a series of graphic aides designed to help students organize and interpret content. Special attention is always given to comprehension questions that elicit critical thinking.
  • Special educational bonus supplements are provided approximately five times during the school year. These supplements connect textbook lessons with the real world and include subjects such as African American history, money matters, character education, and acquiring study skills.

Materials Available for Teachers/Students

  • kidsINK pages - full, color, bi-monthly educational pages published in the newspaper during the school year.
  • Reading Series with accompanying Teachers' Guides - Two stories appear in one-chapter segments each week per school year in the newspaper and one series in the summer. The teachers' guides are aligned to Ohio's grades 4-6 educational standards and benchmarks.
  • Curriculum guides - available for using newspapers to teach journalism and functional everyday reading & writing using the newspaper. Both are high school level guides aligned to Ohio Graduation Test standards.
  • E-mail newsletters - Monthly updates from NIE designed to supplement what we provide in the newspaper. Newsletters include classroom activity suggestions, news about upcoming features, and fun facts about each month to share with students.

Additional Information/Comments

  • Teacher workshops - Available in summer and during the school year, these workshops are designed to communicate the value of the newspaper as a teaching tool and a source of educational content and information. Teachers become students in these workshops! They learn how the newspaper can help students to write complete sentences, learn about the electoral process (even when there is no election being held), problem solving, self-esteem, and identifying fact and opinion.
  • The NIE Coordinator is available for career days, or any other presentations at all grade levels.
  • Youth, Teen, and Teacher Advisory Boards have been formed. Members serve one-year terms with the goals of: 1) serving as liaisons between the NIE program and the community on matters affecting youth today; 2) developing curriculum aligned with Ohio standards; and 3) determining ways to improve the NIE program to meet the needs of all teachers at all grade levels.
  • NIE website - The new NIE website will offer a more convenient order process for teachers, expanded curriculum activities, and feedback opportunities. Plans are in process for an early September, 2005 launch.
