Goals/Mission Statement

To promote education on a historical level to the students of the local school districts.

Instructional Objectives

Students will have an understanding of life in the 1840-1870's in Springfield, and how it relates to the development of American history.Teachers of Clark County will be encouraged to participate in our:

  • American Essay Contest
  • Good Citizen Award
  • Teacher of the Year

OHIO Standards-Benchmarks

Emphasis is placed upon meeting multiple Academic Content Standards for:

  • Social Studies: Business and socialization in the 1840-1870's in Springfield (Gr. 3). The way families interacted, teaching methods used, how they entertained themselves, prepared meals, and the transportation available (Gr. 3-5 &8).
  • History: Local history of the Pennsylvania House (Gr. 3), how it relates to Ohio history (Gr. 4-5), and American history thru the National Road, and the Madonna of the Trail (Gr.8).
  • Social Study Skills and Methods: Demonstration of button making with hands-on experience in order to touch the buttons, picture representation of supplies carried on the Conestoga wagon, period costumes, method used in their daily living and how, thru technology, these techniques have evolved into modern day conveniences (Gr. 3-5 & 8).

Materials Available for Teachers/Students

  • Student Activity Packets that includes instructions to make Conestoga wagons and what pioneers typically stowed in the wagons, recipes, a list of items to locate while on tour, and a questionnaire following the tour, as well as other materials.
  • A five to seven minute video is available upon request for teachers to preview the Pennsylvania House Museum.

    • Saturday: 12:00 p.m to 2:00 p.m.
    • Sunday: 12:00 p.m to 2:00 p.m.
  • Classroom tours available during week. Call to schedule
  • American History Contest (grades 5-8)
  • Scholarships available for high school students who exemplify traits of good citizenship and/or who are pursuing careers in the following fields:
    • Political Science
    • History
    • Government
    • Economics
    • Other scholarship opportunities available
  • Classroom visits available upon request (will dress in period costumes and bring artifacts from the house).
